As a survivor of rape and domestic violence prior to training in various martial arts for eight years, I finally feel capable of defending myself due to training at Krav Maga. I've found that training in an effective system requires being put in stressful situations that other systems have never put me in. I ran into my ex boyfriend one night after only a few weeks of taking Krav Maga. Things had not ended well between us, to say the least, and he came up to me and started yelling and cussing. I felt threatened so I backed away and began to leave. After I had turned to walk away, he started to call me back. He then ran up from behind and put his arm around my shoulder to stop me. He had been violent towards me in the past, so naturally I didn’t want to take any chances this time, and thankfully I had learned how to deal with this type of situation in Krav Maga. One of the techniques in Krav Maga involves getting out of various types of headlocks, and we had gone through a scenario in class that was nearly identical to my situation. I knew exactly what to do, and because we had practiced so much in class I was able to remain calm and perform the technique just as we had learned. I twisted out of the headlock and from there I was in control, holding my attackers head and arms low to the ground. In my youth i studied a lot of different martial arts, gaining a black belt in Shotokan at the age of 20, I however stopped training for many years.
